Phenology calendar: Multiple species

Value of data:  Phenological data are being taken on a wide range of species across the continent and the world.  More and more such data is being brought together by the National Phenology Network, in their Nature's Notebook.  Thus, even your first year's data can been compared with data collected by others to look for trends and insights.  As your site collects data from successive years, you will also be able to look for trends in your area.  As you share the data with Manomet scientists, they will help you think about how to analyze it.  Finally, phenology data can also be useful in explaining climate change effects to others.

Estimated time required:

5 periods or more, plus student observations

Research
question
questions:

When do the phenological features appear?  How

How do they compare to other measurements — in other locales, and in prior years?

Applicability:

Science Practices: 1,3,4,8

NGSS and MA Standards: 6.MS-LS1-3, 7.MS-LS-4, 7.MS-LS2-1, 8.MS-LS1-5

Invasive species census: Four or more species

Value of the data:  In addition to deepening students' understanding of their study site, this project will contribute data to Manomet's study of changes to across trophic levels in response to climate change.  The data will also be of interest to projects aggregating data on the Phenology Network website Nature's Notebook, and (depending on the species) it will be of value to local and regional projects monitoring invasives.  Climate Lab staff will help you connect your data to others who can use it!

Estimated time required:

Protocol under development

Research
question
questions:

What invasive species are present, and how does their abundance compare to other areas and previous years, how ?

How does the regional climate compare to that of their habitat of origin?
